What is HTML?

HTML is a markup language and stands for Hypertext Markup Language. HTML can be used to create and format web pages. The formatting instructions, the so-called tags, include, for example, the specification of paragraph or font sizes. Furthermore, HTML can be used to insert links to other websites or documents. The latest version of HTML is HTML5 and XHTML, in order to make websites as user-friendly as possible and to drive optimized search engine marketing. Factors such as a Responsive Design are important here and can be defined via HTML.

HTML is a markup language, not a programming language! 😊

Who invented HTML?

HTML was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in the 1980s. While working at CERN, the European nuclear research center, he developed a system called “Enquire” that allowed scientists to share information with each other. Enquire was based on a simple markup language that later became known as HTML. In the 1990s, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), founded by Berners-Lee, began standardizing HTML. The first version of HTML was released in 1993 and since then the language has continued to evolve. Today, HTML5 is the current version of the language and is supported by all major web browsers.

Which program do you need for an HTML document?

There are several programs you can use to create an HTML document. Some people prefer a simple text editor like Notepad++, others prefer an integrated development environment (IDE) like Adobe Dreamweaver. If you are not sure which program to use, it depends primarily on what type of person you are and what features you need. If you’re a beginner or just want to create basic HTML documents, a simple text editor like Notepad++ is ideal. These programs are very intuitive and easy to use and don’t require any lengthy configuration. They are also usually free or very inexpensive to purchase. However, if you need more features or want to develop more complex websites, an IDE like Adobe Dreamweaver is a better choice. IDEs usually offer many more features and capabilities than regular text editors and can greatly simplify the development process. However, they are also correspondingly more expensive and often have a steeper learning curve.

What does a basic HTML framework look like?

The structure of an HTML document follows defined guidelines from W3C and accordingly always looks the same:
