Google introduces opt-out option for AI features

05.02.202601 min

Google plans to implement a new opt-out option for AI-powered features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search. This move comes in response to pressure from regulatory authorities, particularly the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the United Kingdom, which are calling for greater transparency and control for web publishers.

More control for websites

Until now, there has been no way to remove website content from AI features without also removing it from traditional search results. The new feature will enable websites to specifically decide that their content should not be used for AI-generated overviews without losing visibility in traditional searches. This decision could play an important role for many publishers, as it allows them to avoid having their content displayed in condensed form without users clicking on their original pages.

Goal: No harm to the traditional search experience

This change would allow website operators to control whether their content appears in AI Overviews—an important development, as these AI overviews can increasingly impact clicks on original content. It remains to be seen how Google will technically implement this feature and when it will be available.

Google emphasizes that the introduction of this opt-out option is not intended to compromise the traditional search experience or hinder the use of AI in search. The option is seen as a step toward achieving a better balance between the interests of web publishers and users who benefit from AI-generated content.

When is the change expected?

Although Google has not yet released any specific details about the rollout and technical implementation, the new control option is seen as an important step toward meeting publishers’ requirements without disrupting the user experience. Read more about it on the Google Blog.
