ChatGPT Ads are coming to Germany

ChatGPT Ads are coming to Germany

Starting at the end of August, ChatGPT will also display ads here in Germany. For you as a marketing manager, this means: a new channel is ready to go, and we’ll show you what’s changing and how you can get started right away.

What OpenAI is specifically changing

Ads will now appear directly below chat responses – clearly labeled as “Sponsored” and visually embedded into the conversation. Only the free Free version and the low-cost Go plan are affected. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu will remain ad-free. Anyone who doesn’t want to see any ads at all can also switch to a new, free, ad-free option with reduced limits.

Special rules for EU users

Unlike in the US, personalized advertising is initially disabled in Germany. For now, OpenAI only takes into account the current conversation topic as well as general information such as location, language, and device type — not previous chats or saved memories. Anyone who wants personalized ads must actively opt in; this decision can be revoked at any time. With this, OpenAI is responding to stricter EU data protection requirements and has revised its European privacy policy accordingly.

What explicitly does NOT happen, according to OpenAI

Data protection remains strict here too: advertisers do not get access to individual chats, conversation history, or personal data — only aggregated performance data is evaluated.

The Germany launch is part of a larger rollout: since May 2026, the self-serve Ads Manager has been running with CPC bidding, a Conversions API, and pixel tracking — initially in the US, now expanded to Germany, France, Ireland, and Singapore. For targeting, OpenAI currently relies on contextual signals such as conversation topic, location, device type, and language. Classic keyword targeting is not yet available.

OpenAI emphasizes: ads have no influence on ChatGPT’s responses and remain clearly separated from the conversation. A placement is not a recommendation.

How you can get started already

According to OpenAI, dedicated self-service access via the Ads Manager won’t be available until later this summer. Until then, there are three ways in: directly through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team, or through certified technology partners like StackAdapt, which offer their own tools and interfaces to the platform. Especially in this early phase — when best practices, audience logic, and success measurement aren’t yet widely established — partnering with someone who already knows the platform from hands-on experience is worthwhile. This helps you avoid beginner mistakes and actually make the most of the head start that comes with getting in early, instead of losing time to trial and error.

Good news: eology now offers ChatGPT Ads as a service!

Whether it’s campaign setup, audience targeting, or success measurement — as your agency partner, we’ll support you from your very first campaign. Just get in touch if you’d like to test what’s possible for your business. 🚀

What does it cost, and who should consider getting started?

According to StackAdapt, an official OpenAI launch partner for ChatGPT Ads, the starting CPC bid is $3–5, with CPM ranging from $15 (low demand) to $60 (high competition). The channel is particularly well-suited for awareness and consideration in high-intent moments, using contextual rather than classic audience targeting. Top categories include retail, home, beauty, travel, cooking, auto, and fitness; it’s currently less suitable for healthcare, finance, legal, and politics.

For context: ChatGPT has over 900 million weekly active users. For shopping-related queries, conversion rates are reported by StackAdapt to increase by 20%.

What’s new in the Ads Manager recently?

The platform also appears to be evolving quickly on the technical side. Early insider reports from PPC experts with platform access point to the following developments, though official confirmation from OpenAI is still pending:
